Safe Deposit Boxes are Movie Stars
Believe it or not there are dozens of movies, even blockbusters, which revolve around safe deposit boxes. They cover almost every genre e.g. action, thriller, romance, you name it and there most likely is one!
This then begs the question; why? One of the main reasons may be a sense of mystery around the boxes. What’s on the inside? How is the main character going to break their way in? As we know they’re not an easy feat to conquer.
This evening, put your feet up with a bottle of wine and bowl of popcorn as we’ve complied a list all involving deposit boxes!
Blockbusting Boxes
Whilst it’s proabably still a pretty niche topic or interest, some of these are actually blockbusters so be prepared to be entertained; lights, camera, action!
- ‘Casino’ (1995) – Martin Scorsese
Robert De Niro and Sharon Store star in this sleazy flick. Ace runs a casino in Las Vegas and his lover is the only one with a key to the safe deposit box.
- ‘Inside Man’ (2006) – Spike Lee
Denzel Washington, Clive Owen & Jodie Foster are the main trio of this white knuckle ride. A police detective, bank robber and broker enter high stakes negotiations after a heist goes wrong.
- ‘The Da Vinci Code’ (2006)- Ron Howard
Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou take centre stage in this race against time to solve a murder. Leading them to a ‘Swiss Bank’ in an attempt to gain access to a safe deposit box to unravel more clues
- ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ (1988)- Charles Crichton
Star studded cast of some of the modern Hollywood greats, John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin. Four eccentric individuals team up on a jewel heist but things to go wrong as they all begin to try to steal the loot.
- ‘Widows’ (2018)- Steve McQueen
A modern classic with Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriquez, Elizabeth Debicki and Liam Neeson. Three widows of a criminal gang are left without their husbands and a key to a safe deposit box which contains a notebook of a $5 million robbery.

‘Hatton Garden: The Inside Story’ (2019)- Tim Conrad
Hard man Ross Kemp he takes a deep dive into the Hatton Garden bank heist from April 2015. The documentary features secret surveillance footage which put the thieves behind bars. Accompanied with a host of great interviews and insights into what happened that night.
We’ve only mentioned 6 examples but the list is much longer. This just proves how often the boxes are stars of the silver screen!
